Lactobacillus are bacteria that normally live in the human gut and vagina.Lactobacillus acidophilus is often considered beneficial because it produces vitamin K, lactase, and anti-microbial substances such as acidolin, acidolphilin, lactocidin, and bacteriocin. Experiments on humans to prove the benefits of L Acidophilus in treating vaginal infections.
There are many different species of Lactobacillus. These bacteria are quite friendly and usually live in the digestive system, urinary tract, and genitals without causingdisease. Lactobacillus is also found in some fermented foods like yogurt and food supplements.
But lately there are fears about some of the lactobacillus product quality. Some of the labeled product containing Lactobacillus acidhopilus but in fact it does not contain at all or contain other types of lactobacilli such as Lactobacillus bulgaricus. Even some products contaminated with unfriendly bacteria.
Lactobacillus is used to treat and prevent diarrhea, including types of viral infections such as diarrhea in children and travelers diarrhea. Also used to prevent and treat diarrhea associated with antibiotic use.
Indication
1. Effectively treat diarrhea in children caused by viruses.
Children with diarrhea caused by viruses are often treated with lactobacillus heal faster around half a day faster than without the lactobacillus treated. More doses would be more effective. At least 10 billion units of colony during the first 48 hours should be used.
2. To prevent diarrhea in children caused by antibiotics.
Giving Lactobacillus GG along with antibiotics seems to reduce diarrhea in children often occurs if only taking antibiotics alone.
3. Prevent diarrhea in adults who are hospitalized.
Drink containing Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus twice a day during treatment with antibiotics and a week after that significantly lowers the risk of having diarrhea.
4. Prevent diarrhea due to travel.
Travelers diarrhea caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites that have not been subjected to before. Consuming Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus GG seems to prevent diarrhea in travelers. Effectiveness of Lactobacillus GG may vary depending on the destination because there are different bacteria in different locations.
5. Prevent diarrhea caused by cancer treatments (chemotherapy).
Chemotherapy drug called 5-fluorouracil can cause severe diarrhea and other gastrointestinal side effects. Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus GG is often used to overcome them.
6. Relieve colic in infants by consuming the product Lactobacillus reuteri.
7. Prevent lung infection with a milk containing Lactobacillus GG or a particular combination containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium.
8. Treating bowel disease called ulcerative colitis or enteritis. Consuming certain combination products containing lactobacillus, bifidobacteria, and Streptococcus can overcome the symptoms.
9. Helps treat pouchitis (inflammation of the pouch the end of the small intestine) is a chronic, inflammatory bowel complications of surgery. Treatment continued for a year with certain formulations of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Streptococcus seems most efficacious.
10. Treating irritable bowel syndrome. Lactobacilus can reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome such as bloating and abdominal pain.
11. Treating vaginal infections caused by bacteria (bacterial vaginosis). Clinical studies show that certain types of Lactobacillus may help treat vaginal infections if used in the vagina. Researchers found that Lactobacillus acidophilus suppository and vaginal tablets most effective. Researchers also found that the capsules of Lactobacillus gasseri and Lactobacillus rhamnosus may extend the time between infection.
12. Treating and mencgah ezcema (swelling of the skin) in infants and children who are allergic to cow’s milk. The combination of Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri appears to be freeze dried to reducesymptoms of eczema in children aged one to thirteen years.
13. Helps the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection (H pylori) that cause ulcers or stomach ulcers.
14. Treating diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile bacteria.
Dose
1. Lactobacillus product strength is shown in the number of living organisms per capsule. Dosage is generally in the range of 10 billion live organisms daily taken in 3-4 separate doses. The following doses have been studied in scientific research.
2. Through the mouth:
- For children with diarrhea caused by viruses: 5-10 billion live Lactobacillus GG in the solution to replace lost water.
- To treat infants and children with diarrhea: 10 to 100 billion live Lactobacillus reuteri every day for over 5 days. Doses below may not be effective. The combination of Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri 10 million billion live cells of each type of twice a day for five days.
- To prevent diarrhea caused by antibiotics in children: Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus GG (Culturelle) containing 20 billion live organisms per day. Certain beverage containing Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus (Actimel, Danone) 97 mL twice a day can also be used.
3. Vayi and prevent diarrhea in children aged 1 to 36 months: six billion live Lactobacillus GG twice a day and fermented milk containing Lactobacillus casei DN-114 001 strain in a dose of 100 grams, 125 grams, or 250 grams a day is also used.
4. To prevent and shorten the duration of diarrhea in infants abru born in the first year of his birth in rural areas in developing countries: 100 million Lactobacillus sporogenes life has been given every day of the year.
5. To prevent respiratory infections in children in day care: 260 ml milk with 500.000 to 1 million units of Lactobacillus GG colonies per mL. A dairy product that contains each of the 5 million units of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium colonies in 120 ml of milk twice a day are also used.
6. To treat diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile: 1.25 billion Lactobacillus GG to live in separate doses for two weeks.
7. For abdominal pain (ulcerative colitis); combination product containing freeze-dried living bacteria, including lactobacillus, bifidobacteria, and streptococci (VSL # 3) 3 grams twice a day is used to help therapy.
8. To prevent travelers diarrhea: Lactobacillus GG 2 billion organisms per day.
9. For diarrhea due to chemotherapy: Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus GG containing 10-20 billion organisms daily life.
10. To treat atopic dermatitis: Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus GG. Lactobacillus reuteri 100 million live bacteria per day, or Lactobacillus sakei 5 billion live bacteria are also used twice daily.
11. For irritable bowel syndrome: 10 billion Lactobacillus acidophilus which is heated to death twice daily for six weeks. A combination of prebiotic-containing lactobacillus, bifidobacteria, and Streptococcus 450 billion, twice a day. Certain beverages containing Lactobacillus plantarum 299v taken twice a day.
12. To prevent colds in adults: a mixture of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus paracasei, 1 billion live bacteria per day.
13. For abdominal pain in infants: a product of Lactobacillus reuteri 100 million units of the colony once daily 30 minutes after feeding.
14. To prevent the symptoms of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in premature infants: Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG 6 billion live bacteria per day.
15. To prevent lung infections in adults: Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG 2 billion live bacteria twice a day.
