Ankyloglossia or ribbon tongue is an inherited disorder experienced by infants at birth and can cause certain problems in infants, children and adults. Ankyloglossiais an abnormality with the condition of the network that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth (lingual frenulum) is too thick and short, thus making the movement or mobility of the tongue becomes very limited.
Generally the problems that arise in infants as a result of ankyloglossia is the difficulty to obtain the correct position and fit when nursing. When growing up, ankyloglossia can cause difficulty chewing, difficulty speaking (it is difficult to say certain letters, eg ‘R’) because of limited movement of the tongue. So that eventually it can cause the baby or child is not getting enough food intake.
